Genital Herpes And Your Eyes: The Herpes Virus Can Cause Serious Eye Problems

Two types of herpes viruses can cause serious eye problems (one type that causes cold sores and the other causes chickenpox). Genital herpes is not typically associated with eye problems, however, simplex type 1 herpes can cause issues with the eyes and can be passed to the genitals.

Herpetic eye disease is not a sexually transmitted disease.  It is, however, the same virus which causes chickenpox and the nervous system disease shingles.

When this virus affects the eye, it’s referred to as herpes zoster ophthalmicus

Just as with other herpes viruses, herpes simplex 1 is already present in many adults.  Viruses in the herpes family typically live around the nerve fibers in humans without every causing symptoms or a problem.

Sometimes, the viruses will begin to multiply or they will form from one part of the body to another.  When this happens, the herpetic disease has broken out.

Symptoms of herpetic eye disease:

-    Pain in and around only one eye
-    Redness, rash or sores on the eyelids and around the eyes, especially in the forehead (occasionally on the tip of the nose)
-    Redness of the eye
-    Swelling and cloudiness of the cornea

Herpes is a virus and so treatment typically consists of antiviral medications.  Depending on how serious the herpes is and what part of the eye is affected, the doctor may prescribe eye drops, pills or a combination of both.

The eyes are vulnerable to herpes.  Eyes can be affected when someone touches an active infection and then passes it to their eyes by rubbing or touching.  This type of herpes infection is called herpes keratitis.  If left untreated, it can lead to blindness.

Warning signs of herpes keratitis include:

-    A prolonged feeling that something is in the eye
-    Pain
-    Irritation, redness, swelling or eye discharge
-    Unusual sensitivity to light

It’s important that you see your doctor immediately if you experience any of these symptoms.

No matter which type of herpes an individual suffers from, it’s important for him or her to be aware of the exact type of herpes that they have.  You need to know about treatment options, diagnosis and prevention.  It’s not only important to understand about prevention for yourself, but it’s important to understand how to protect and prevent your sexual partners from becoming infected with the herpes virus too.

There are support groups and counselors available who can also help you deal with all sorts of emotional feelings you may be having as well as refer you to clinics, help with medications and treatments.
