Instead of treating each outbreak as it occurs, taking VALTREX once daily, whether or not you have symptoms, can reduce the number of outbreaks you get. VALTREX, along with safer sex practices, has also been proven to reduce the risk of spreading genital herpes to a partner.
Valacyclovir is used to treat cold sores (herpes labialis), shingles (herpes zoster). It is also used to treat genital herpes in patients with a normal immune system. Valacyclovir can also be used to control genital herpes outbreaks in all patients. This is also known as suppressive therapy. This medication helps control symptoms, but does not cure the disease. Valacyclovir belongs to a class of medications known as antivirals. If you are taking Valacyclovir for treatment of genital herpes, to lower the chance of giving herpes to your partner, it is important to follow safe sex practices even if there are no symptoms present. Always use a condom made of latex or polyurethane. When you have symptoms or are experiencing an outbreak, do not have sexual contact with your partner.
Daily therapy may be right for you if you want to increase your chances of being outbreak-free, you find your outbreaks are bothersome, annoying, and you wish you had fewer of them your partner doesn't have genital herpes. Patients and their healthcare provider may find that Valtrex can be a great treatment option because it can help reduce the number of outbreaks you have. Once-daily VALTREX is also the only medication proven to reduce the risk of spreading genital herpes.
Before deciding on daily therapy patients need to have an open and candid discussion about this issue with their healthcare provider to determine if daily therapy is right for them. Patients should tell their doctor how genital herpes has affected their life.
VALTREX outbreak therapy works to treat returning genital herpes outbreaks as they happen; the standard dose of VALTREX is 500 mg twice daily for 3 days. VALTREX is most effective when taken within 24 hours of the start of signs or symptoms. There are no studies that show how well VALTREX will work if you take it more than 24 hours after the start of symptoms. Even if outbreak symptoms go away it's important to always take a full course of the medication.
