Herpes – Prevention Of The Spread Of The Infection

There are two different types of herpes – oral and genital. The most important thing to know about herpes is that it can be transmitted easily and you should be aware of the ways to prevent the spread of it.

Although once you have the herpes infection, it will remain forever.  There are ways to greatly reduce the transmission of herpes.

First, it is important to tell your partner.

This will be the hardest step of your treatment, but once you have done it, you can work together to safe guard each other.

To infect people, the herpes simplex viruses (both HSV-1 and HSV-2) must access the body through broken skin or a mucous membrane such as inside the mouth or on the genital area. Each virus can be carried in bodily fluids (such saliva, semen, fluid in the female genital tract) or in fluid from herpes sores. The risk for infection is highest with direct contact of blisters or sores during an outbreak.

Second, therefore you should avoid contact during the high risk period, during and just after an outbreak when the infection is most contagious.  It is possible to still have a healthy relationship.

Third, it is important to limit the number of sexual partners that you have.  By having a monogamous relationship, you are greatly decreasing the chance of spreading the virus to others.  This does not mean you have to be with the same person the rest of your life, it is just important to be responsible with the one person you are with.

Fourth, in taking a daily medication, you can help reduce viral shredding, which minimizes the risk of passing the infection.  In using herbal supplement, you may be able to build a strong immune resistance against to the infection.

At this time, there is no vaccine to prevent against the virus being transmitted.  For oral herpes, there are creams and ointments that are over the counter that can be used to reduce the duration, frequency and severity of Herpes symptoms as well as reduce the risk of spreading.  For genital herpes, other than anti-viral medications, there are herbal ointments and remedies to help relieve your symptoms.

Again, while you are having an outbreak, it is important to maintain good hygiene to reduce the spread of Herpes, this would include:

•    Wash your hands regularly
•    Do not share drinks, food or towels
•    Staying healthy will minimize outbreak as these are often triggered by low immune defense system.

In using these techniques, you can help reduce the spread of the infection and help to prevent recurrences.
