What Are Some Of The Root Causes Of Genital Herpes?

There are two main types of genital herpes: HSV-1 and HSV-2. HSV-1 tends to cause cold sores or fever blisters around the mouth and can be spread to the genital areas during oral sex. HSV-2 is the type of herpes which generally causes genital herpes. This virus is spread through sexual contact and skin-to-skin contact.

HSV-2 is extremely contagious even if the person who is affected does not have any open sores.  Contrary to popular belief, it is almost impossible to get the virus from having contact with a toilet because the virus dies quickly outside of the body.

If you suspect you have genital herpes, schedule an appointment with your doctor immediately and avoid any and all sexual and intimate contact until you are examined by your doctor

Your doctor will typically examine you and will collect a sample tissue scraping or a culture of the blisters or early ulcers.  A blood test can also be used to test for herpes.

People who have genital herpes commonly have other types of STDs, so it is very likely that your doctor will examine you for these diseases as well.  Other common diseases include Chlamydia, gonorrhea and HIV/AIDS.

Many people do not have symptoms of genital herpes.  Sometimes people have symptoms which are so mild, they barely even notice a difference or change in their body.  In more severe cases, individuals may suffer from rather painful attacks with the whole body and may feel very ill for several weeks.

Symptoms can be flu-like, with symptoms of headache, aching joints, tiredness, fever or pain in the legs.  The lymph nodes in the groin are often enlarged and tender and may feel like large peas under the surface of the skin.  Genital symptoms may include sores, painful urination, itching and discharge from the penis or the vagina.

Genital herpes can be spread the following ways:

•    Intercourse

•    Rubbing genital areas together with direct skin contact with no clothing on between each person

•    Transmitting the virus from one body part to the other.  For example, if someone touches their mouth and then wipes his or her hands on their own genital areas after urinating without first washing their hands, he or she can spread the virus to another body part.  This is not a common occurrence

•    HSV-1 or oral herpes can be spread to a partner’s genitals.  The receiver will not get HSV-2, but will suffer from HSV-1 in the genital area.  As herpes becomes more common, this method of spreading it happens more and more often.

•    Genital to oral contact; just like HSV-1 can be passed from the mouth to the genital area, HSV-2 can be passed from the genital area to the mouth.
